The Himalayas, the ‘Abode of the Snows’, fringes the northern borders of the country. Ten of the world’s 14 peaks that exceed 8000 metres are located in Nepal. Yet the distance between the mountains and the tropical lowlands is, in some places, less than 100kms.

If you’re into trekking, rafting, mountain biking or just simply the great outdoors this is THE country for you!

Culturally, spiritually and linguistically it’s a real melting pot. Hardly a day goes by without some sort of festival being celebrated.

The population of Nepal is made up of dozens of different tribal groups such as the Newars, who dominate the area around Kathmandu. Other important tribes include the Thakalis, Gurungs, Magars, Tamangs, Chepangs, Tibetans, Bhotias (Bhutanese), Rais, Limbus, Jirels, Sherpas, Bahuns, Chhetris and the Tharus and Mithila of the Terai.

The country has gone through some turbulent times recently: the massacre at the palace; the civil war with the Maoists and the King’s suspension of parliament in 2004. However, early in 2006, the people took to the streets and demanded the restoration of democracy.

The Maoists and the Seven Party Alliance have recently signed a peace accord so there’s hope that peace will finally come to this breathtaking country.
