The population of Nepal is
made up of dozens of different tribal groups
such as the Newars, who dominate the area
around Kathmandu. Other important tribes
include the Thakalis, Gurungs, Magars,
Tamangs, Chepangs, Tibetans, Bhotias
(Bhutanese), Rais, Limbus, Jirels, Sherpas,
Bahuns, Chhetris and the Tharus and Mithila
of the Terai. |

The country has gone
through some turbulent times recently: the
massacre at the palace; the civil war with
the Maoists and the King’s suspension of
parliament in 2004. However, early in 2006,
the people took to the streets and demanded
the restoration of democracy. |

The Maoists and the Seven
Party Alliance have recently signed a peace
accord so there’s hope that peace will
finally come to this breathtaking country. |
